A Blast (of glass) from the Past

The 11th annual IAP Slide Seminar (1959)

Pathologists in Indiana have been meeting each spring since 1949 to learn and share knowledge. That year, Arthur Purdy Stout conducted a tumor seminar. It was well received and became a tradition carried on by the Indiana Association of Pathologists.  Several of these seminars were contributed to Juan Rosai's Collection of Surgical Pathology Seminars, a site jointly sponsored by USCAP and Leica Biosystem.

In 1959, Fathollah K. Mostofi, MD,  presented the 11th Annual IAP Seminar. In 1948, Dr. Mostofi was named chairman of the genitourinary department of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. In 1965, he led the World Health Organization's International Reference Center for Urological Tumors and was he author of 200 articles and 15 books on genitourinary pathology. Among his many awards, he received the Gold Medal of the International Academy of Pathology.

Typically, the IAP presenters are distinguished pathologists from outside the state of Indiana. However, almost twenty years after Dr. Mostofi's Indiana seminar, the IAP is proud to announce that two of world's most prominent urological pathologists who will present at the 68th IAP Slide Seminar are local. Linking the past with the present, the speakers not only bring their expertise but also bear a connection to the history of the Indiana Association of Pathologists Spring Slide Seminar.

John Eble, MD, was the 2010 recipient of the F.K. Mostofi Distinguished Service Award.  The USCAP established this award in 1976, and is given annually to "a member of the Academy who has emulated Dr. Mostofi with outstanding service to USCAP and to the International Academy of Pathology." Dr. Eble also edited the World Health Organization Classification of tumors: pathology and genetics of tumours of the urinary system and male genital organs in 2004.

David Grignon, MD was selected as member of the WHO Committee for the 2015 Classification of Tumors of the Urinary Tract and Male Genital Organs (Responsible Author for 5 sections). Since 1993, he has been a member of the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists, created to carry on Dr. Stout's (the first IAP presenter) passion for "the spirit of academic excellence."
