"When you hear hoofbeats, think horses zebras" - Interesting Cases in Clinical Microbiology

Objectives-Gavina

• Identify rare or atypical microbial pathogens in clinical practice and describe their distinguishing laboratory features.

• Recognize the clinical and epidemiological clues that may prompt consideration of uncommon infections.

• Evaluate and discuss real-world case studies involving diagnostic pitfalls of "zebra" infections and extract practical lessons that can be applied to routine microbiological evaluation.

Necrotizing soft tissue infections

 Objectives-Jawanda

• Recognize early clinical features that may suggest necrotizing soft tissue infections and differentiate it from other soft tissue infections

• Understand pathogenesis and microbiologic causes

• -Implement appropriate, timely management strategies, including empiric antibiotic choices and urgent surgical intervention, to reduce morbidity and mortality

Blood Parasite Diagnostics in the Real World

Objectives-Lavik

• Map the transit of a specimen through the clinical laboratory following submission for blood parasite infection testing.

• Explain (to a colleague) the medical and scientific justifications for strategies implemented in the detection, identification and characterization of parasite infections.

• Recognize that pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical factors influence testing

CME Accreditation

Attendees will receive their CME certificate from the College of American Pathologists.

You must follow their instructions to claim credit. Approximately 4-6 weeks after the event, you will receive an email from the CAP with instructions on claiming your credit(s) hours(s) and printing your certificate.

Gap and Needs

Presentations by experts in the field with opportunity for discussion will advance knowledge and competence of the learners

*CME Accreditation Statement

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the College of American Pathologists and the Indiana Association of Pathologists. The College of American Pathologists is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians

CME Designation

The College of American Pathologists designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 3.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Building Bridges

Physicians who are not pathologists may recognize that the learning opportunity of this seminar may help close a practice gap of their own. Non-pathologist physicians are generally not eligible for membership with the IAP. However, we welcome these physicians and they may attend the meeting at the IAP member price. Please contact iap@indianapath.org for registration with discount.

Indiana pathologists unsure of their membership status may contact the IAP office for assistance at iap@indianapath.org.
